I have been OBSESSED with this song since hearing it earlier today. I was talking to a friend from high school and they were telling me how they got to see Sleep Token and iPrevail earlier this year (along with many other bands) and how there were so many songs across multiple albums that were worthy of listening to - and fucking to as well! I had already been a fan of The Summoning, but never took the time to listen to their albums outside of that song, so I was intrigued. Why not add a few songs to that playlist we all have, but don't talk about. I hopped onto Apple Music and clicked onto their Album Take Me Back To Eden.
I really like "Granite" for it's nostalgic and heavy metal vibes. I'm an alternative, punk rock and emo gal at heart. "Are You Really Okay?" gave me John Mayer vibes with the introduction and just flows into this melodic journey once Vessel1 starts singing. Aqua Regia just makes you want to slowly move your hands into the air to snap and do a slow groove to the piano. Babyyyy, when I heard "DYWTYLM" I was instantly hooked. The lyrics and beat have a wave of sadness in them that are masked by the upbeat tempo. When it ended, I played it again and just spun around dancing in my kitchen; I've had it on repeat all day because I cannot get enough of this song! Vessel1 just has an intriguing voice.
The opening question - 'Do you roll with the waves or do you duck into deep blue safety?' pegs the question of are you fight or flight? Are you letting the waves of life carry you or are you hiding to avoid being carried away and remaining stagnant?
As I got more into the song meaning and analyzing the lyrics, I really loved that it was about how we don't like the reflection of ourselves or love ourselves as much as another person does. It reminded me of "beauty is in the eye of the beholder." We have the capacity to be highly critical and unloving to ourselves, but see the beauty in others and love and accept their flaws, more than we can with ourselves. Wishing that we loved ourselves more, despite traumatic events, flaws, and the reflection we see in the mirror.
It's really felt in the lyric "Is there something you give that you will never receive in return? Do you know what it is? Do you wish that you loved me?" and " I would turn into a stranger in an instant if I could." We all struggle so much with self image, depression, and anxiety - masking it with smiles and happiness, much like the upbeat tempo in this song.
Sleep Token, themselves, are in masks. I'm guessing for many reasons. Privacy being the utmost speculation- being a celebrity is hard enough - having the ability to walk around in your daily life without the constant intrusion from fans, paparazzi's, and media is comforting and I feel like it's something we take for granted. I have so much respect for them and the people around them letting them have a sense of normality and being able to separate their work and personal lives so well. If you could hide from the world, wouldn't you, too?
I wish for all us, that we continually grow to love ourselves and appreciate our bodies in all their glory - flaws and all. So, Sleep Token. Thank you for giving me a glimpse into your world with your newly released album and a song that I am currently loving!
When you look at your reflection in the mirror, be reminded of their lyric "Smile back at me, please." and love on yourself. Positive affirmations and being kind to ourselves goes such a long way.
Stay Beautiful, loves.
